Trex Company Wins First Place in Virginia Governor's Environmental Excellence Awards for Second Time

WINCHESTER, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 25, 2003--Trex Company, Inc. (NYSE:TWP), has won first place in the Virginia Governor's 2003 Environmental Excellence Awards for Outstanding Environmental Project in the Smaller Manufacturer's category. Trex Company manufacturers Trex(R) decking and railing, which is made primarily with recycled plastic grocery bags, reclaimed pallet wrap and waste wood. Trex Co.'s Mike Vatuna, Director of Materials, and Dean Craft, Director of Logistics and Consumer Relations, accepted the award certificate and flag at the Virginia Manufacturer's Association (VMA) Annual Meeting in Richmond, Va. on September 9, 2003. Trex Company also won the award in 2001, for a Trex nature trail on Teddy Roosevelt Island in Arlington, Va.

"It is very gratifying to receive this recognition from the Governor's office and the Virginia Manufacturer's Association for the second time," said Vatuna. "It demonstrates Trex Company's leadership in the building product industry and its commitment to recycling." Trex decking and railing is splinter-free and contains no harmful chemicals. Last year, the company used nearly 250 million pounds of recycled and reclaimed plastic and an equal amount of waste wood. These are materials that usually end up in landfills. Trex Company also demonstrated its initiative to broaden the types of plastic used in its manufacturing process by investing $11 million in a new plastics-recycling production line.

The winning project was the "Old Torpedo Factory" in Alexandria, Va., which was decked with 55,000 square feet of Trex 2x8, in a color that turns driftwood gray shades. Trex decking was used for a boardwalk where tour boats depart for a summer cruise up the Potomac River and for more than 30 boat slips. Dotted with shops, restaurants and benches, the boardwalk is a beautiful addition to the historic waterfront town.

Trex decking and railing has been widely used for residential decks and commercial projects such as boardwalks, nature trails, marinas and playgrounds. Trex Company is the nation's largest manufacturer of alternative decking, which is marketed under the brand name Trex(R). Trex decking and railing offers an attractive appearance and the workability of wood without the ongoing need for protective sealants or repairs. Trex decking is manufactured in a proprietary process that combines waste wood fibers and reclaimed polyethylene and is used primarily for residential and commercial decking. The Company sells its products through 90 wholesale distribution locations, which in turn sell Trex decking to approximately 3,300 independent contractor-oriented retailer lumberyards in the U.S. and Canada.
