Trex Company Wins Prestigious EFFIE Award For Second Year in A Row; Campaign Takes Ad Effectiveness A Step Further

WINCHESTER, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 10, 2002--For the second consecutive year, Trex Company, Inc. (NYSE: TWP), has won the EFFIE(R) Award in the Agricultural/Industrial/Building category in a ceremony held recently in New York City.

The EFFIE Award recognizes advertising effectiveness, which is measured by a campaign's ability to produce outstanding results in the marketplace, along with demonstrating outstanding creativity and visual impact.

"We're very honored to win the EFFIE Award again this year," said Andy Ferrari, Vice President of Marketing & Business Development at Trex Company. Trex Company is the manufacturer of Trex(R) decking and railing, a splinter-free decking lumber made with recycled/reclaimed plastic and waste wood, that requires no staining or sealing for protection. Trex Company was one of two building product companies to win 2002 EFFIE Awards, along with Pella Windows. The 2002 EFFIE winners in other categories include Pepsi, IBM, and Harley-Davidson.

This year, Trex Company was recognized for taking last year's "Think Outside the Rectangle" campaign and driving it further by closing the loop between the homeowner and contractor. "By taking full advantage of consumer demand and brand awareness, we were able to gain active support from decking contractors," Ferrari explained. "Homeowners are now asking their contractors to create innovative Trex decks that reflect their lifestyle, personal tastes and design preferences."

The ad campaign has been making homeowners aware that they can have a spectacular looking Trex deck and at the same time, have a deck that's splinter-free and easier to maintain. "We're closing the loop on the purchase process, helping to ensure that Trex(R) maintains its clear leadership position," said Pat Weas, Account Director at Carmichael Lynch, the Minneapolis-based advertising and collateral agency that developed and executed the Trex campaign. "Last year, we challenged homeowners to dream about their decks." said Weas. "Now, they are challenging their contractors to build the deck of their dreams with Trex."

Another innovative marketing tool the company created is the TrexPro(TM) contractor program, which matches interested homeowners with experienced Trex contractors. Consumers can simply enter their zip code on the Trex Company web site or call the 800 toll-free number to locate a TrexPro contractor or Trex dealer in their area. This year, Trex Company also re-designed the company web site to make it more interactive and personal for each audience.

In addition to advertising, Trex Company gets its message out by working with Precise Communications, a public relations firm in Morris Plains, New Jersey. Last year, the public relations program generated 362 million print and broadcast impressions and is on a similar track this year. The firm has regularly secured news stories about Trex on major TV networks and home improvement shows.

The EFFIE Awards were introduced in 1968 by the New York American Marketing Association and have become the industry benchmark for successful ad campaigns. In addition to the United States, EFFIE Award competitions are held in sixteen countries.
