Trex Company Announces Large-Scale Plastic Recycling Plant in Spain

WINCHESTER, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 10, 2001--Trex Company, Inc. (NYSE: TWP), manufacturer of Trex(R) Easy Care Decking(R), today announced the company's participation in a joint venture, named Denplax, SA, to recycle polyethylene at a new facility in El Ejido, Spain. The other joint venture partners are a local Spanish company responsible for public environmental programs in southern Spain, and an Italian equipment manufacturer. The initial phase of construction has been completed and the recycling plant has begun limited operations.

The plant is designed to recycle waste polyethylene generated primarily from agricultural applications. The advanced cleaning system employed in the facility produces polyethylene suitable for use in Trex Company's Wood-Polymer(TM) lumber manufacturing process. When fully operational, the plant will generate more than 20,000 tons of recycled plastic annually. Under the joint venture agreement, Trex Company has exclusive right to 100% of the plant's production.

Trex Company President Robert Matheny stated, "This plant is one element of a comprehensive sourcing strategy to ensure that we have the raw materials required to satisfy our continued long-term growth. The Denplax joint venture gives us a reliable source of high-quality polyethylene at a predictable, favorable price, while solving a major solid waste disposal problem in southern Spain."

Trex Company is the nation's largest manufacturer of non-wood decking, which is marketed under the brand name Trex(R). Trex Wood-Polymer(TM) lumber offers an attractive appearance and the workability of wood without the ongoing need for protective sealants or repairs. Trex decking is manufactured in a proprietary process that combines waste wood fibers and reclaimed polyethylene and is used primarily for residential and commercial decking. The Company sells its products through 87 wholesale distribution locations, which in turn sell Trex decking to approximately 2,900 independent contractor-oriented retailer lumberyards across the United States.
