Trex Company Wins Prestigious Golden Hammer Award For Business-to-Consumer Advertising

WINCHESTER, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 5, 2001--Trex Company, Inc. (NYSE:TWP), manufacturer of Trex(R) decking, the leading non-wood decking lumber in North America, has won the 2001 Golden Hammer(R) Communications Award for Business-to-Consumer Advertising.

The award, sponsored by National Home Center News and ProDealer Magazines for the past 17 years, recognizes excellence in the area of "Home Improvement & Building Materials Communication" and is judged on how well a company has met the marketing challenges before it.

Trex Co. had the formidable mission of continuing to build brand awareness in the non-wood decking category, while clearly defining itself as the brand of choice in a market overrun with new entrants. It won the Golden Hammer Award based on its "Think Outside the Rectangle" campaign, which met and in many cases exceeded specific marketing and advertising goals, including dramatic increases in lead generation and website visits. The Trex campaign leveraged a strong presence in consumer and professional contractor media, gaining the attention of an upscale target audience as well as building trade support and loyalty. Within these publications, Trex featured breathtakingly beautiful Trex decks in dramatic locations where conventional decking could never hold up and inspired homeowners to dream about their decks.

"We are extremely pleased to win the Golden Hammer award," said Andy Ferrari, Trex Company's Executive Vice President of Sales & Marketing, "particularly as it represents our efforts to establish Trex decking as one of the premier brands in the entire building materials industry. We've worked hard to convey the advantages of Trex decking along with the fact that we've had nearly a decade of successful installations throughout North America. Over that time, we've learned a lot about what it takes to have the leading brand."

Trex decking is a splinter-free, low-maintenance alternative for decking that contains no chemical preservatives or additives. It is made primarily with recycled plastic and waste wood. Last year, the company used more than 200 million pounds of plastic and an equal amount of waste wood, materials that usually end up in landfills. During the past year, approximately two-thirds of all the non-wood decks constructed were Trex decks.

In addition to the Golden Hammer Award this month, Trex Company swept the decking category of Remodeling Magazine's 2001 Brand Leader survey. In June, Trex Co. won the 2001 EFFIE(R) Award for advertising effectiveness in the Agricultural/Industrial/Building category. Trex Co. was ranked #1 on Forbes Magazine's list of the "200 Best Small Companies in America" in October 2000; won Industry Week's Growing Companies 25 Award in November 2000; and was named one of Business Week's "Top 100 Hot Growth Companies" in May 2000.

Trex Company is the nation's largest manufacturer of non-wood decking, which is marketed under the brand name Trex(R). Trex Wood Polymer(R) lumber offers an attractive appearance and the workability of wood without the ongoing need for protective sealants or repairs. Trex decking is manufactured in a proprietary process that combines waste wood fibers and reclaimed polyethylene and is used primarily for residential and commercial decking. The Company sells its products through 87 wholesale distribution locations, which in turn sell Trex decking to approximately 2,900 independent contractor-oriented retailer lumberyards in the U.S. and Canada.
