Trex Company Wins Prestigious Golden Hammer Award For Advertising Excellence For Second Consecutive Year
WINCHESTER, Va., Aug 23, 2002 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Trex Company, Inc. (NYSE: TWP), manufacturer of Trex(R) decking and railing, has won the 2002 Golden Hammer(R) Communications Award for the second year in a row, this year in the category of Business-to-Business Advertising.

The award, sponsored for the past 18 years by Home Channel News and ProDealer Magazines, recognizes excellence in the area of "Home Improvement & Building Materials Communication" and is judged on how well a company has met its marketing goals.

"To win the Golden Hammer Award two years in a row is quite an honor and tells us that we are effectively reaching both our target consumer and professional audiences," said Andy Ferrari, Trex Company's Executive Vice President of Marketing & Business Development. "As our decking product line turns ten years old this year, we are proud that the Trex brand is being honored by our industry."

In 2001, Trex Co. won the Golden Hammer award in the Business-to-Consumer advertising category, with its "Think Outside the Rectangle" campaign. Aimed primarily at homeowners, this campaign inspired them to dream of possibilities for new designs with Trex decking and railing, such as the ability to achieve sweeping curves. The new challenge this year was to intensify the focus on professional deck builders. This was accomplished by providing business building information both on the Trex Co. website and through advertising in leading contractor trade magazines. It also involved establishing innovative builder support programs. One such program, TrexPro(TM), matches homeowners interested in Trex decking and railing with experienced TrexPro contractors in their area.

"A key to our success has been having a network of the premier dealers and distributors in the industry who understand how to market the Trex brand," added Ferrari. "This year's winning campaign was designed to reach deck builders at every communications level and close the loop between the contractor and homeowner." The overall results of the campaign were increased sales, as well as Trex brand leadership and preference confirmed in several leading builder-trade magazine reader surveys. Today, the Trex brand enjoys more than twice the consumer awareness of the closest competitor and outsells the next five competitors combined.

Trex decking and railing is splinter-free and requires no stains or sealants for protection. It will not rot, crack or split and contains no harmful chemicals or preservatives. It is made primarily with recycled plastic grocery bags, reclaimed pallet wrap and approximately half waste wood. Last year, the company used more than 200 million pounds of recycled and/or reclaimed plastic and an equal amount of waste wood, materials that usually end up in landfills.

In June, Trex Company also won the 2002 EFFIE(R) Award for the second year in a row, based on advertising effectiveness, outstanding creativity and visual impact.
