WINCHESTER, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 13, 2000--Trex Company, Inc. (NYSE: TWP), manufacturer of Trex(R) Easy Care Decking(R), the nation's leading alternative decking lumber, has achieved designation as a Virginia Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program (SHARP) worksite.

SHARP is a Virginia Department of Labor and Industry (DOLI) voluntary compliance program which recognizes companies that continuously strive to improve safety and health in the workplace. In a ceremony on April 5, 2000, DOLI Regional Director Neal Mohlmann presented the award and flag to Trex Co. at the company's manufacturing facility.

"Safety in the workplace has always been a number one priority at our facilities," said Robert Matheny, President, Trex Company. "We are very pleased that the Virginia Department of Labor has recognized our efforts." Matheny credited compliance with the SHARP program to James Tebbetts, Safety and Environmental Manager for Trex Company and the 18-member Trex Co. Safety Committee. This self-directed team represents the production, warehouse, maintenance and engineering areas of the manufacturing facility. They evaluate and improve all potential hazards in the Trex Co. workplace, regularly inspecting work areas, equipment and incidents. "The efforts of this outstanding team contributed to our SHARP recognition," said Tebbetts. "The members have worked overtime to achieve SHARP's 25 areas of safety and to reduce injury rates."

According to John Mills Barr, Commissioner of the Virginia Department of Labor and Industry, Trex Company is a proven leader in the areas of occupational safety and health in Virginia. The company is entitled to bear the SHARP logo and fly a SHARP flag over the plant as part of the recognition.
