Trex Company Wins First Place in Virginia Governor's Environmental Excellence Awards
WINCHESTER, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 11, 2001--Trex Company, Inc. (NYSE: TWP), has won first place in the Virginia Governor's Environmental Excellence Awards for "Outstanding Environmental Projects" in the Smaller Manufacturer's category.
Trex Company manufacturers Trex(R)decking, which is made primarily with recycled plastic grocery bags, reclaimed pallet wrap and waste wood.
In a ceremony held at The Homestead in Hot Springs, VA, Lt. Governor John Hagar, and Secretary of Natural Resources John Paul Woodley, Jr. presented an award certificate and flag to Trex Company's Executive Vice President/Technical Operations Roger Wittenberg, who pledged to fly it proudly over the company's manufacturing facility in Winchester. The black-tie event was part of the Virginia Manufacturer's Association 79th Annual Meeting.
"We are very pleased to have this recognition from the Virginia Manufacturer's Association and the Governor's office," said Wittenberg. "It demonstrates that Trex decking is not only a brand leader with numerous performance advantages, but is also environmentally responsible." Trex decking is splinter-free and contains no chemical preservatives or additives. Last year, the company used nearly 200 million pounds of recycled and reclaimed plastic and an equal amount of waste wood. These are materials that usually end up in landfills.
Trex decking has been widely used for residential decks and commercial projects such as boardwalks, nature trails, marinas and playgrounds. In Virginia, the Teddy Roosevelt Island Trex walking trail in Alexandria has enabled the public to access wetlands areas and enjoy more of the park than before, while setting an example for the use of sustainable building products. Nationally, Trex has been used for walking trails in the Florida Everglades and at Mt. Rushmore and for a 2 1/2 mile seaside boardwalk spanning three New Jersey shore towns.
First place winners in the two other categories of The Governor's Environmental Excellence Awards for Manufacturers were: Siemens Automotive Corporation for Environmental Programs/Large Manufacturers and Dominion (Clover Power Station Jointly with ODEC) for Environmental Projects/ Large Manufacturers.
Trex Company is the nation's largest manufacturer of non-wood decking, which is marketed under the brand name Trex(R). Trex Wood-Polymer(R) lumber offers an attractive appearance and the workability of wood without the ongoing need for protective sealants or repairs. Trex decking is manufactured in a proprietary process that combines waste wood fibers and reclaimed polyethylene and is used primarily for residential and commercial decking. The Company sells its products through 91 wholesale distribution locations, which in turn sell Trex decking to approximately 2,900 independent contractor-oriented retailer lumberyards in the U. S. and Canada.
