Trex Company To Build Plant in Knox County, Tennessee
WINCHESTER, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 20, 2001--Trex Company, Inc. (NYSE: TWP) has selected a site near Knoxville, Tennessee for the next plant in its long-range expansion plans. As demand for its Trex(R)Easy Care Decking(R)is expected to grow at 25% or more annually, Trex Company continues to look ahead to the need for additional manufacturing and distribution capacity.
Trex Company signed a purchase agreement on February 20 to acquire a 100-acre plot of land from The Development Corporation of Knox County. Trex was assisted in the site selection for this facility by Mark M. Sweeney, partner with McCallum Sweeney Consulting of Greenville, SC. Although construction plans have not yet been finalized, the company expects the plant to ultimately be the largest of Trex's three sites and will employ more than 160 people. Trex Company currently has 400 employees. The addition of production lines will be coordinated with capacity expansions at the company's existing sites in Winchester, Virginia and Fernley, Nevada.
Trex Company President Robert Matheny stated, "The Knox County site will offer us a number of important benefits, including an ideal transportation center, an excellent local workforce, and access to raw materials. Most importantly, it will improve our ability to service a growing base of Trex decking distributors across the United States, with the flexibility for a controlled build-out in step with our marketing plan. Our strategy to manage growth includes expanding our geographic footprint in ways that optimize the various components of our costs, including raw material sources, efficient manufacturing facilities, and distribution of our products. This site meets all of our planning criteria."
Melissa Ziegler, Executive Director of The Development Corporation of Knox County, commented "We are thrilled to have the Forbes-ranked 'Best Small Company in America' become part of our community. Trex Company's decision to locate here illustrates the many advantages that Knox County has to offer. We look forward to a long and mutually beneficial partnership." In October 2000, Forbes ranked Trex Co. as number one in its list of the nation's 200 Best Small Companies, and in February 2001, HOME Magazine awarded Trex Easy Care Decking with the American Building Products Award for "defining the composite decking category."
