Three Businesses To Be Honored For Environmental Stewardship At Annual Connecticut College Award Ceremony; Trex Company Takes Gold Medal

NEW LONDON, Conn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 24, 2000--Three businesses from across the nation will be honored this evening by Connecticut College for their ability to combine environmental stewardship with jobs, productivity and profits.

Trex Company (NYSE: TWP) of Winchester, Va., has won the eighth annual Connecticut College Inherit the Earth Award gold medal for business for manufacturing Trex(R) Easy Care Decking(R), a highly successful alternative decking lumber that is environmentally responsible. Agro Management Group of Colorado Springs, Colo., is receiving the silver medal for its AMG 2000 motor oil produced from canola oil and soybean oil. GreenDisc of Redmond, Wash., recyclers of all forms of electronic media, has won the bronze medal.

"We want to fuel the economy and what better way to do it than by supporting business innovation for the environment." said Julie Belaga, former chief operating officer for Export-Import Bank of the United States and former New England regional administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency, who will keynote the event.

Trex(R) Easy Care Decking(R) is a composite lumber made primarily from recycled grocery bags, reclaimed pallet wrap and waste wood - all materials that would normally end up in a landfill. In 1999, 100 million pounds of reclaimed and recycled plastic was used to manufacture Trex decking along with equal amounts of hardwood scrap from woodworking operations. Trex has become the leading decking alternative on the market today, owning 64% of the plastic/composite decking category. According to company officials, the product does not splinter and maintains its long-lasting good looks without staining or sealing. Trex decking is sold through 2,000 contractor-orientated lumberyards in North America and is nationally code-listed as a decking lumber. In addition to residential and commercial decks, Trex decking has been used for miles of boardwalk along the New Jersey seashore and in Toronto, as well as for trails throughout the Florida Everglades and Mt. Rushmore.

Agro produces AMG 2000, the first-ever completely biodegradable vegetable-based motor oil that is less toxic and produces fewer emissions than petroleum motor oils. AMG 2000 eliminates waste motor oil, reduces oil consumption in engines and significantly reduces green house gases.

GreenDisc provides a set of specialized recycling programs for all forms of electronic media, and a branded line of recycled computer supplies. Software publishers each year have millions of boxes of products that are obsolete. GreenDisc provides secure, audited disposal.

Inherit the Earth (ITE) is a public environmental education organization of the college. It promotes the idea that business can be successful while meeting the needs of environmental sustainability. Since 1993, ITE has recognized annually those businesses that are making progress in their industry while benefiting the environment. This year's awards presentation was cosponsored by New York City-based GO-Buildings.com.
